Core Technology

ProTectaDNA is a biotechnical tagging system, which applies unique codes to a wide variety of liquid and solid materials. Marked items can be identified unequivocally to provide proof of ownership or source and to allow the detection of fraud.

The technology is based on the design, production, application, recovery and identification of unique DNA molecules. Small, single stranded DNA molecules are designed and synthesized of between 70 to 100 bases in length. The order of the DNA bases is varied from one tracer to another.

As a consequence, the process can in theory generate 1060 distinct tracers from DNA molecules of 100 bases in length.

The Value of DNA as a Security Taggant

Why does StratTech use the coding capacity of DNA to covertly mark and trace items, which require specific identification? DNA provides:

  • A large number of unique and secure codes, which can be easily decoded by the producer of the tags
  • A tagging system, which will not affect the appearance or performance of the item marked
  • A tagging system, which is robust, reliable and cost effective
  • A tagging system, which is undetectable by any agency with criminal intent
  • A tagging system, which maintains functionality in ultra-dilute concentrations

There are alternatives to the use of DNA as security tags but all have their limitations. DNA, on the other hand, meets all the requirements for an invisible, secure, robust but decipherable marker.

Application Technology

ProTectaDNA cannot be counterfeited or reverse-engineered. It is flexible in use and simple to apply as it can be formulated to suit specific applications needs:

  • DNA tagging can be formulated to suit a wide variety of applications
  • DNA tags are quality control checked for amplification and identification
  • Each marker solution is given a unique code
  • All marker solutions are quality checked prior to release to the client
  • Synthetic DNA tracers are chemically indistinguishable from natural DNA

DNA Amplification

The DNA decoding technique is based on the industry standard Polymerase Chain Reaction. This quick laboratory analysis is client-specific as the knowledge of molecular keys (or built-in primers) is required to start any reaction on a sample extraction. This service is provided by a “neutral” third party laboratory, including in the firld, equipped with the necessary equipment if provided with the user’s secret molecular keys.

Not only does DNA have the ability to provide a large number of codes but also modern molecular biology approaches permit the specific amplification of target DNA thereby allowing minute quantities to be used as the tag.

Altogether, results are obtained within four hours and returned to the user with a duly filled certificate of analysis. Repeats are possible as the laboratory keeps extraction aliquots.
